Vista Lago Files Revised Wastewater Permit Application to Replace Surface Discharge with Underground Drip Fields
BREMEN, Ala. — Vista Lago lead developer Nathan Stoops announced today that the development submitted a proposed modification to its existing Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) wastewater permit to replace the previously permitted surface discharge with underground disposal through engineered drip fields.

The revised application includes four key changes:
1. No above-ground discharge. The revised plan replaces the previously permitted surface discharge with underground soil disposal.
2. Four acres of underground drip fields. Treated water would be distributed underground through approximately four acres of engineered drip fields located within undeveloped space on the site.
3. Same extended aeration wastewater treatment plant. The revised application keeps the same treatment plant design and the same 60,000-gallon-per-day design capacity.
4. Treatment happens first. Wastewater would be treated in the extended aeration plant before the treated water enters the underground drip-field system.

"We listened to our neighbors on Smith Lake, and this revision takes the above-ground discharge off the table," said Stoops. "Every gallon still goes through the same treatment plant first. The only thing that changes is where the treated water goes once it leaves the plant."
"This is a change in disposal, not a reduction in treatment," Stoops said. "The plant and the treatment process stay exactly the same."

The revised application was submitted to ADEM on October 5, 2026, as a modification to NPDES Permit AL0084516. The application is now under review.

Statement from Vista Lago Lead Developer Nathan Stoops: From day one, we have worked to be responsible community partners, and that remains our goal today.

We have heard the concerns of residents, property owners, community leaders, and businesses regarding Vista Lago’s wastewater discharge permit, and we have decided to explore alternative discharge options similar to existing discharge operations on Smith Lake.

While our wastewater treatment plant was always designed to protect the lake, sometimes being a good partner means going a step further to address community concerns.

We want to thank State Representative Cindy Myrex and local business leaders, who have been strong voices for the entire Smith Lake community throughout this process. Smith Lake Vista Lago Wastewater Treatment Plant Designed to Release Water 20 Times Cleaner Than Conventional Septic Tank Runoff

The Vista Lago development team today released detailed information about the project's wastewater treatment plant, which is designed to release treated water that is 20 times cleaner than conventional septic tank runoff, according to the project's engineering team.

The Vista Lago wastewater treatment plant will discharge treated water at least five times cleaner than the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) permit standards through an outfall located approximately one-third of a mile from the Ryan Creek (Smith Lake) shoreline.

The figures were released in response to claims circulating locally about the project, including the claim that raw sewage will be dumped into Smith Lake.

"No raw sewage will ever be released into this creek or this lake," said Nathan Stoops of Maverick Construction. "The permit does not allow it, and the plant is not built to do it. I am a Smith Lake resident, and I share the public's passion for our lake. We simply want the public to be provided all the facts."
Stoops also noted that every drop passes through biological treatment, ammonia removal, settling, and disinfection before it is released approximately one-third of a mile from the Ryan Creek shoreline.
The treated water will travel overland before reaching the lake at a flow of 10 to 15 gallons per minute, less than what a single summer rainstorm sends down the same slope.

The plant uses extended aeration, a treatment method built on technology invented in 1914 and used in wastewater treatment ever since. Smaller systems of this type were developed in the 1950s and are now common across Alabama, with many operating under the same state permits and standards that apply to Vista Lago.

"There is nothing experimental here," Stoops said. "This is the same biological process running in municipal sewer systems across this state, just on a smaller scale. The real choice was never between this plant and nothing. It was between this plant and 107 septic tanks on steep, rocky ground above the lake."
For comparison, a septic tank removes only 25 to 40 percent of the waste that enters it, and the remainder goes into the soil, where, on lakefront slopes, it moves downhill toward the water. No one tests it, no one monitors it, and no reports are filed with the state.

The Vista Lago plant will be operated by an independent, state-licensed operator rather than by the developers.

Under the ADEM permit, the operator tests the water weekly, sends samples to a laboratory, and files monthly reports that become public records. If the plant falls out of compliance, ADEM can require repairs, impose fines, and issue binding legal orders.

The permit was issued following ADEM's full public notice and appeal process, as required by state law, with the comment period and appeal window open to the public regardless of county of residence.

Vista Lago Development Clarifies ADEM Permit for Smith Lake Development

Our team has recently become aware of some public statements being made regarding the ADEM permitted septic system at Vista Lago. As full-time residents of Smith Lake, we would be equally concerned if we heard the claims being presented. In the spirit of full transparency and with a desire to be in good community with our neighbors, we would like to respond by clarifying the scope and nature of our permit.

Our active ADEM permit does NOT:

Authorize direct discharge into Smith Lake.
Authorize raw sewer discharge on land or water.

Our ADEM permit authorizes the site to:

Manufacture, install, and operate a commercial STEP septic system.
Release treated effluent, held to strict ADEM water quality standards, via discharge into a roughly 30-acre wooded parcel that will never be developed.

Additional Details:

The STEP system is a scale version of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. This technology has never been installed on Smith Lake because of the high cost associated with fabricating and installing the system. Our team chose to incur the multiple 7 figure cost, because we see a tremendous value to the community in not adding another large scale drip field system that would drain in the lake.
Treated effluent (clear water) will be discharged 1/3 of a mile inland from the lake.
Effluent standards for our STEP system are 5X cleaner than required by ADEM.
In an abundance of caution, and outside of the ADEM required scope, effluent also discharges into an engineered bio-retention area designed with specific aquatic plants that will soak up any surface water not absorbed by the wooded ecosystem.

Vista Lago Development also confirms its active ADEM erosion control permit is in good standing with no violations. Our team maintains a close working relationship with ADEM, with weekly conversations and frequent site inspections. The site was inspected this week, with no violations noted and a clean bill of health granted for continued site development.

Even though all active permits have already processed through a period of public comment, the Vista Lago development team is working to schedule a community Q&A session to address any lingering concerns. The time, date, and location for this event will be announced in the next few days.

The Menu

Burrata and Roasted Tomato Appetizer

Ingredients

Cherry tomatoes
Olive oil
Italian seasoning
Flaky salt
Arugula
Fresh basil (some left whole, some sliced thin)
Cold burrata cheese
Balsamic glaze

Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
2. Toss the cherry tomatoes in olive oil, then roast them in the oven for 20 minutes or until the skins become tender.
3. Season the roasted tomatoes with Italian seasoning and flaky salt, then use a fork to gently mash them.
4. On a serving platter, lay down a base of arugula and whole basil leaves.
5. Arrange the warm, mashed roasted tomatoes in a circle around the edge of the plate.
6. Place the cold burrata cheese right in the center.
7. Cut open the burrata, then sprinkle the entire dish with flaky salt, more Italian seasoning, and the thinly sliced fresh basil.
8. Drizzle generously with balsamic glaze and serve.

The Pink Hydrangea

Ingredients

1 pound frozen strawberries
½ cup fresh mint leaves (and some for garnish if desired)
1 (59 oz) bottle pink lemonade
2 liters grapefruit soda (used some from Trader Joe’s but Fresca works too!)
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 6–8 lemons)
1–2 cups plain seltzer water
Ice

Instructions

Add frozen (or slightly thawed) strawberries and fresh mint leaves to a pitcher and crush with the back of a spoon into a nice rich puree.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
Keep cold until ready to serve.
Serve in a decorative self-serve container.
Pour over ice.
ENJOY!

TIP - to make the recipe alcoholic, either of these 2 options work:

Add 1 bottle (750 mL) prosecco just before serving
or make the whole batch non-alcoholic and add a splash of prosecco to each individual glass

Olive Garden-Style Salad

Ingredients

Garden salad mix
Pepperoncini peppers
Red onion
Roma tomatoes
Olives
Parmesan cheese
Italian dressing

Instructions
Chop the pepper, onion, tomatoes, then toss with the salad mix. You can add the olives whole or chop them. Pour in the Italian dressing and toss with the salad fully, then sprinkle with parmesan cheese to taste.

The BEST Sourdough Bread Recipe

If you are a sourdough person, this is for you. If you aren’t the kind of person who enjoys spending hours making a single loaf of bread, just grab a loaf from a bakery!

Ingredients

525g water
20g salt
200g active starter (It should pass the “float test”)
700g bread flour

Instructions

Make the starter ahead of time: It should be active enough to float a teaspoon on a cup of water. This is usually 8–12 hours after feeding (100g water, 100g flour, 100g starter).
Mix the dough: Whisk the starter into the water, add the flour, and mix until it forms a shaggy dough ball.
Rest: Let it rise for 1–4 hours.
Add salt: Mix in the salt by pinching and stretching it into the dough.
Stretch and Folds: Pull the dough from the bottom, stretching it up and over itself. Turn the bowl a quarter turn and do it again. Repeat 4 times. Do this once every 30 minutes for a total of four rounds of stretch and folds.
Bulk Rise: Allow the dough to rise for 1 hour at room temperature. Cover the bowl with plastic (Fun fact: shower caps work great for this!) and set it in the fridge for 12–15 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge and let it sit for a couple of hours until it gets close to room temperature.
Divide and Bench Rest: On a clean, floured surface, pour out the dough and lightly dust it with flour. Cut it in half. Take each half and form it into a round ball (There are tons of videos online showing ways to do this). Let the dough balls rest for 20–30 minutes.
Final Shape and Rise: Flip the dough ball over so the “top” is on the counter. Gently stretch and pull the sides to form a seam, pinching as necessary. Place the dough seam-side up in a rice-floured, cloth-lined banneton or bowl. Let it rise in the fridge for 2–4 hours.
Baking: Preheat your oven and Dutch oven to 450°F for at least 30 minutes. Take the dough out of the banneton/bowl and place it seam-side down in the Dutch oven. Score the loaf as desired. Place the lid on the Dutch oven and return it to the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes at 450°F. Remove the lid and bake uncovered for 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and Dutch oven, then place on a cooling rack for at least 1 hour.

Homemade Pasta

(It’s easier than you think!)
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

1 ½ cups Bob’s Red Mill Semolina Pasta Flour (You can grab it at Publix)
½ t salt
2 eggs, beaten
2 T water
2 T olive oil

Instructions

On a clean work surface, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the beaten eggs, water, and oil. Combine with your hands or a dough scraper to make a stiff dough.
Knead for 10 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic (When you poke it with your finger, it should bounce back). Wrap the dough in a towel or place it in a plastic bag and let it rest for 20 minutes.
On a lightly floured surface, roll to your desired thickness and cut as desired—or use a pasta machine!
Bring a large pot of salted water (Salty like the ocean!) to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until tender, about 3–5 minutes.

Tips: I recommend cooking it immediately. When cutting the pasta, keep the dough floured so it doesn’t stick to itself. Try to place each noodle into the pot individually to keep them from sticking together.

Homemade Alfredo

Ingredients

½ stick salted butter
1 T fresh minced garlic
2 T all-purpose flour
32 oz heavy whipping cream
8 oz Italian 5-cheese blend
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 t white pepper
1 cup reserved pasta water

Instructions

Melt the butter over medium-low heat in a large saucepan.
Add in the garlic and cook until fragrant.
Whisk in the flour and cook for about one minute until the flour is combined.
Slowly incorporate the heavy whipping cream. Cook until it thickens, then turn the heat down to low.
Whisk in the cheeses and white pepper.
Stir until completely incorporated, then slowly add in the reserved pasta water until you reach your desired consistency.

Homemade Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

28 ounces San Marzano tomatoes (canned whole)
½ yellow onion, diced very fine
2 cloves garlic, diced very fine
1 ½ T extra virgin olive oil
⅛ t red pepper flakes
2 fresh basil leaves
⅛ t dried oregano
1 t kosher salt (plus more to taste)
Sugar (optional, a pinch at a time if your sauce tastes too acidic)

Instructions

Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add 1 ½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil.
Add ⅛ teaspoon red pepper flakes, ½ yellow onion, and a pinch of salt. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
Add 2 cloves garlic and cook for one more minute.
Add 28 ounces San Marzano tomatoes to the pan.
With a potato masher (or the bottom of a mug), mash down the tomatoes gently. It can get a little messy, so do this part slowly. Keep mashing until they are mostly broken down.
Stir the tomatoes into the olive oil mixture well.
Add 2 fresh basil leaves, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano, then stir.
Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
Taste the sauce for any additional salt.
Serve over pasta, as a marinara dipping sauce, or on pizza.

Get ready to have some fun this year on Smith Lake for the 4th of July for America's 250th birthday celebration. Most folks are planning a nice long weekend due to the holiday falling on Saturday. Many expect an influx of friends and family to entertain all week. There is plenty to do all around the large tri-county lake area.

Independence Day on Smith Lake is special, rain or shine. Locals always pray for summer storms to hold back for the holiday's events. If it's perfect weather, you'll see fireworks big and small all around the lake the entire holiday weekend as you are boating. Enjoy viewing small private celebrations from the water as you boat home carefully and slowly along the lake area after sunset, and after a long day of fun in the sun. If there is inclement weather in an evening, most of the main annual events will reschedule and we'll update the list.

There are several big fireworks shows that have been submitted so far, see the list below this blog.

"OFF WATER" = fireworks that are not along a shoreline or visible from the water.
"ON WATER" = the event is on the shoreline and can best be viewed by boat at a safe distance.

Check back to see if any dates are rescheduled due to weather or other factors. If a favorite event near you cancels, watch to see if they revise plans, try out another event nearby on another day, or just thoroughly enjoy smaller shows at homes on the shoreline, or your own private celebration.

If you celebrate at home, BE SAFE. Include plenty of red-white-and-blue decor (check our Amazon store for ideas in holiday decor and more). Be sure to stock up on holiday essentials like: flags, sparklers & fireworks, outdoor games, backyard grilling items, a charcuterie board for s'mores, and/or a churn for homemade ice cream (<---click link for recipe), plus all the toppings and much more. For boaters, load up with floats, towables, watersports equipment, and all the basic boating essentials. Stock up on ALL the favorites of summertime. Then simply kick back and enjoy the fun, laughter, experiences, and daily wind-downs by the fire pit - MAKE MEMORIES! No matter how you celebrate, the weekend is truly a favorite for all who spend it on Smith Lake.

Steel, Service, and the Shoreline: An Interview with Guest Editor Justin Hogan of Free State Boat Docks

On Smith Lake, the shoreline is more than just where the land meets the water; it is the front door to a lifestyle. As our second guest editor and the sales manager and co-owner of Free State Boat Docks, Justin Hogan has dedicated his career to helping neighbors realize the full potential of that shoreline. We recently sat down with Justin to discuss his personal connection to these waters and how his commitment to superior build quality and service has defined the Free State legacy for three decades.

This journey began in 1996 with a simple search for a dock with structural integrity. Upon purchasing their first lake home, Justin and his father, Dan Hogan, found themselves disappointed by the options available on the market. Deciding to take matters into their own hands, they launched a father-son project that would ultimately redefine dock construction on Smith Lake, growing from a single personal dock into a premier regional brand.

"We realized very quickly that we weren’t the only ones looking for something better," Justin recalls. "Once the neighbors saw what my father and I had built, they started asking if we could do the same for them. We started Free State because there was a clear need on this lake for a dock that was engineered to last, not just something that would get by for a few seasons."

The Value of the Investment

Today, that mission continues through a focus on total transparency. Because a dock represents a major financial commitment, Justin believes homeowners deserve to understand the "why" behind the build before it ever hits the water. This openness is particularly vital in Alabama—a caveat emptor state where the legal burden of "buyer beware" rests solely on the homeowner. By offering a 15-year structural warranty and pulling back the curtain on his engineering and materials, Justin ensures his clients aren’t just hoping for quality, but are making an informed investment backed by long-term accountability.

"A boat dock is not a small-ticket purchase; a family is investing in their future," Justin explains. "They’re making a capital investment because a dock increases the value of their property, and it directly affects the fun they have—or do not have—on the water."

To ensure that investment is sound, Justin encourages potential clients to look beyond the sales brochure and see the work in progress.

"The first thing I want a customer to do is come see our building process," he says. "I want them to see our infrastructure, our people, and the scale of our operation so they know exactly who they are trusting.”

Professional dock building in North Alabama requires a mastery of "big water." Justin has spent decades observing how Smith Lake reacts to storms and heavy holiday wakes—knowledge he has recently applied to Free State’s expansion into the Pickwick and Guntersville markets. He advocates for structural steel, arguing that true strength is found in engineering rather than sheer weight.

"Between the storms and the wakeboard traffic, it is imperative to have a one-piece, True Truss construction, structural steel frame," Justin says. "It provides the durability and longevity that families need to protect their investment for the long haul."

Beyond that structural engineering, aesthetics play a massive role in a dock's long-term value. Perhaps the most telling aspect of Justin’s leadership is his "24-hour rule." In an industry where service can be elusive after an installation is complete, he and his father have built a team of 62 employees and a massive fleet of workboats to ensure their customers always have a response.

"If you have a problem with your boat dock, we must, by our policy, be at your property within 24 hours to address it," Justin says. "We have the size to do that. We have the ability to maintain our own product. In my opinion, that is the biggest difference between Free State and any other company."

This dedication is tangible; Justin’s cell phone number is written directly on the front and back of every dock they manufacture.

"I want to know about a question immediately,” he says. “If you have a question on a Sunday about a cable adjustment or your boat lift, you can always pick up your phone and text me. I want to be available when the question comes to mind."

When the work day ends, Justin’s focus shifts to the woods and the Winston County roots that shaped him. A dedicated advocate for conservation and habitat management, he balances his time in the field with a commitment to his family, prioritizing the hours spent with his wife, Salley Hogan, and his children. This local legacy is already extending to the next generation; his son, Evan, a senior at Winston County High School and a competitive archer, now spends his afternoons learning the family trade at Free State Boat Docks.

Built for the Long Haul

For Justin, the true measure of success is found in the longevity of the relationships he has built since that first project with his father. He operates with a deep sense of accountability to the people of North Alabama, believing that a lasting legacy is built on the strongest steel and a reliable word. Bloomin’ Festival Kicks Off 42nd Year at St. Bernard

CULLMAN, AL — The historic grounds of St. Bernard Abbey and St. Bernard Preparatory School are once again coming alive this weekend as the 42nd Annual Bloomin' Festival Arts and Crafts Fair welcomes visitors from across the country for one of North Alabama’s most anticipated events.

Set among the scenic campus and shaded walkways of the abbey, the festival brings together artisans whose work reflects both creativity and craftsmanship. Guests travel from near and far to discover handmade art created by individuals who have turned their talents into livelihoods, lifelong hobbies, and a way to connect with people who appreciate unique work.

“We are so excited to welcome new artisans to Cullman as well as those who have become a tradition at St. Bernard,” said festival director Joyce Nix. “Many of our artists return year after year, and they’ve truly become part of our St. Bernard family.”

Among the returning demonstrations will be traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, broom making, woodturning, and basket weaving. New this year will be chainsaw artist Corey Worden of Wetumpka, who will showcase the dramatic process of transforming raw wood into sculpted works of art.

Festival patrons will discover an extraordinary variety of one-of-a-kind items including pottery, jewelry, quilts, clothing, cypress and teakwood furniture, birdhouses, and metal art. Specialty foods will also be plentiful, including the ever-popular monk bread and cookies prepared by the Benedictine monks.

Sweet treats remain a highlight for festival-goers, with funnel cakes, strawberry waffles, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and classic Pepsi-Cola favorites available throughout the grounds. Under the large festival tent, guests can enjoy freshly smoked chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and Polish sausage. While strolling through the grounds, vendors offer fudge, cinnamon-roasted almonds, mini donuts, and an assortment of homemade cookies, pies, and pastries.

Sunday will conclude with the highly anticipated prize giveaway, featuring a 2026 Buick Encore along with a Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner, Blackstone outdoor griddle, and Apple AirPods 4. Tickets were mailed in February to friends and alumni and may also be purchased online along with official festival merchandise.

This year’s festival T-shirt, designed by student Lexi Clemons, features a vintage postage stamp theme highlighting artwork and activities found throughout the event. The shirts are available in three colors—blush frost, flint blue, and eucalyptus blue—in sizes S–3XL while supplies last.

Visitors are also invited to explore the beloved Ave Maria Grotto, which is open throughout the weekend for an admission fee of only $6. Admission to Bloomin’ Festival is a $10 donation per person, while children 12 and under are admitted free.

“Bloomin’ Festival is a big deal to St. Bernard Prep School,” Nix said. “Our goal is to raise $250,000. This funding helps maintain the operational support of the school. You can help us reach that goal by attending the festival, supporting our giveaway ticket sales, sponsoring the event, and sharing the festival with your friends and neighbors.”

Nix also emphasized the importance of community support in making the festival possible. “We are very grateful to our sponsors who help fund costs associated with the festival,” she said. “Without their support, it would be extremely difficult to host a show of this magnitude on a private school budget.”

Now is the time, before spring, to put boats in the shop for servicing, maintenance and upgrades. Local shops are overloaded during spring rush and that can sometimes result in serious delays to your boating season. Maintaining and servicing a boat annually protects your investment, and upgrades can substantially help resale value.

Foul Weather Preparedness – Smith Lake, Alabama

Here in North Alabama, residents are mostly concerned with weather associated with severe thunderstorms that produce tornadoes or damaging straight-line winds, and these are most prevalent in spring and late fall. But on rare occasions, we do experience difficulty with winter storms that produce freezing rain (ice storms), sleet, and snow. This is because Southerners are generally not as prepared for these conditions as well as Northerners, who encounter them more frequently.

We’ve prepared a list of things to consider in anticipation of foul weather events, and we hope you find these items useful depending on what season the weather occurs. Feel free to contact us if you have additional information you’d like to see included.

*As a common courtesy, be sure to check on neighbors, elderly, friends and family to make sure everyone is getting through the weather event safely. Know exact addresses and directions in case you need to call for help during emergencies. Whenever possible, assist those that may have trouble preparing or making it through the event without difficulty.

STORM PREPARATION LISTS
For Seasonal Storms and Power Outages
NOTE: items in italics are pertinent to winter storms

HOME

AT HOME

Batteries – have every size possibly needed and then some.
Blankets or sleeping bags - especially important in cold weather situations when there is no heat.
Boat prep – well before any threat of bad weather, it’s a good idea to secure marine vessels and cover them properly, as well as remove all watersport equipment and other lake season gear. It is best to have annual boat maintenance and winterizing done prior to the onset of winter. Most lake residents do this by late fall.
Can-opener – non-electric, of course.
Cash – preferably in small bills. Cash is handy in power outages when card readers are down in stores or at gas pumps, assuming one can get to a store or gas station.
Clothing – a water-resistant sealed package of clean laundry is advised for any weather emergency, because nothing is better than clean dry clothing after a rough weather period. For winter weather: hats, mittens, socks, blankets, jackets, and more clothes for layering. Long-lasting hand warmers are handy items to have packed and ready to use.
Coolers – even inexpensive coolers will work to help keep food and meds safe in a power outage, and they are good for transferring refrigerated items to increase shelf life of cold foods.
Disposable dishware – paper plates, bowls and disposable utensils will save a lot of dishwashing after an inclement weather event.
Dock preparation – be sure to remove any items from the dock that could get blown off from wind or damaged from ice or snow. Secure all dock connections to shore, docking lines on vessels, and prepare boat lifts to function properly. Documents (VIP) – safe and sealed hard copies (or digital - on a shared service like DropBox or a thumb drive) copies of personal, financial and medical records: e.g. medication (dose schedules and other pertinent medical information), proof of address, the lease or deed for the home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, credit cards, and social security cards.
Electrical devices – hopefully, surge protectors for TVs and computers are pre-installed; but, it’s still best to turn off and unplug unnecessary electrical equipment, including sensitive electronics, computers, stoves and washers/dryers that can also be damaged from power surges/spikes. Leave at least one light on for when the power is restored. It’s also a good idea to go ahead and locate the breaker box ahead of weather events and advise the entire family of its location and operation.
Entertainment – find some fun items to keep the family busy when all electronics are dead or charging. Consider books, art supplies, craft projects, board games, cards, and download any movies, books, or maps for offline use. In the event of snow, stock up for outdoor fun as well, e.g. sleds, snowshoes, snowball making devices, etc.
Fire safety/prevention – test smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors.
Firewood – make sure to have at least a week’s supply stacked and ready to burn.
First Aid Kit – for harsh winter conditions, make sure there are warming blankets in the kit along with all the best basics for any injuries.
Food – non-perishable and some perishables (see list below). Consider turning the refrigerator/freezer temperature down before a storm event so that the fridge/freezer will hold a cold temp longer. Keep refrigerator/freezer doors sealed as much as possible prior to the weather onset and obviously after a power outage. Unopened refrigerators can keep foods optimally cold for at least 4 hours, so use the refrigerated food first. Use food from the freezer last, as a full freezer will hold a safe temp for about 48 hours if kept tightly closed. Use non-refrigerated perishable and non-perishable foods last. If a power outage lasts beyond a day, move pertinent refrigerated foods into coolers pre-stoked with ice before the weather event. Throw out any questionable food – when in doubt, throw it out! Take temperatures of food with a thermometer if needed. Anything exposed to temps higher than 40 degrees F for 2 hours or more needs to be disposed of.
Gas – have tanks full in all vehicles. Gas stations could lose power. Consider that cranking and using a car as backup for charging phones/tablets/computers may be necessary at some point if charger banks run down. Also keep plenty of extra fuel in gas cans to run generators or whatever is needed.
Gas (Natural/Propane) – make sure the home’s gas tank for heating/cooking has been filled ahead of anticipated storms and definitely prior to winter weather.
Generator – backup power generators are a must. They are expensive, but a whole house generator is optimal when living in a remote area. Gas powered generators are also a great back-up plan to run small household items for necessity. Never run a generator or grill inside garages or homes or too near them. At the very least, keep a small generator that can charge phones and perform very basic duties when needed. Have long extension cords on hand so the generator does not have to be too close to living quarters. The generator purchased should be rated for the appropriate amount of power. When using a portable generator, connect any equipment directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a portable generator to a home’s electrical system. Basically, read the instructions and follow them or contact a licensed electrician for instructions, assistance and proper installation.
Grilling – outdoor grills should be clean and ready to use with all utensils nearby and ready. Make sure to have charcoal, charcoal lighter fluid, matches/lighters for a charcoal grill, or a full propane tank for a gas grill.
Heat Source – if using a fireplace, confirm the chimney is clear and have dry wood split and ready to burn. Electric alternatives are a must, or propane and kerosene powered space heaters (be sure to check safety instructions on these and follow instructions carefully to avoid danger). For winter weather, it’s best to identify one room in the house as the “warm room” for the family to camp out in if power fails. This keeps heat isolated to one area so the source doesn’t have to work as hard. Make sure everyone is together for close watch and on alert to minimize accidents or danger.
Helmets – having these on hand can be a lifesaver during tornadic and straight-line storms for protection from falling debris, but also consider them for winter weather events too. It’s also nice to have these for sledding or purely for safety when traversing icy areas outside since there are many steep areas near homes around the lake.
Ice – stored in coolers well ahead of any weather event for milk or anything needing to stay cold.
Lighting – flashlights (w/batteries), battery-operated candles and/or portable camping lanterns. Flame candles should be a last resort option due to being a fire hazard. Each family member needs a flashlight of their own for single tasks such as quick trips to bathrooms, taking out trash, getting firewood, etc.
Matches/lighters – for lighting a fire in the fireplace, or for outside grills and campfires, and if needed for cooking on a gas stove.
Medications – at least a full week supply needs to be on hand. Pick up prescriptions and essential medical supplies early. Also have back-up batteries for any medical devices that are necessary.
Outdoor furniture, lightweight items, tools – however possible, secure these and other items that could potentially blow away or be damaged by heavy ice or snow in winter weather events.
Phone chargers and cords – make sure to have pre-charged or battery-operated phone chargers on hand. Charge all phones, power banks, tablets, and other rechargeables prior to inclement weather events. Vehicle chargers can be used in emergencies.
Photography – for insurance purposes, it is always great to keep updated photos of all property in case of damage/loss.
Plumbing – in cold weather scenarios, insulate, drain or allow water to drip at a trickle for pipes located in exposed outside walls or otherwise under-heated locations. Open cabinets to allow warm air circulation around plumbing. Disconnect hoses outside and properly cover all outdoor spigots. Cover outdoor faucets with insulated caps or wrap with insulation. Locate water shut-off valves and know how to shut off water quickly if a pipe bursts.
Power – immediately report any downed power lines to appropriate officials and do not touch or go near them. Contact neighbors upon discovery. Identify any nearby neighbors, shelters or businesses that might have power if there is a need to access them in an emergency. Plan well ahead.
Radio – have a wireless/battery-operated NOAA weather radio to receive emergency information, plus a regular portable radio for entertainment.
Refrigeration – set the fridge and freezer to colder temps ahead of time so they hold temperature well, giving food a little longer lifespan. Don’t forget to reset to normal temps after a storm.
Safety advice – the primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning device inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially-enclosed area. Locate units away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to creep indoors. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors, or by an open window or door and call for help.
Thermometer – a digital quick-response thermometer can quickly check the internal temps of food to ensure they are cold enough to use safely. Also have a thermometer ready for food cooked using alternative methods to make sure meat temps are adequate and edible.
Toiletries – residents may have to take sink baths with water warmed by a fire or gas stove, so prepare products ahead and have plenty of towels clean and ready to go.
Tools – keep a shovel or other outdoor equipment to make foot paths and travel areas safer. Add items like a multipurpose tool, knife, scissors, flares, chainsaw, blower, etc.
Vehicle (see list below) – whenever possible, keep vehicles away from trees and power lines.
Water (see list below) – it’s a good idea to fill jugs, buckets or the bathtub with water for flushing and washing. It’s also good to freeze several water bottles to serve as “ice packs” in coolers to drink when thawed.

HOME PANTRY STAPLES
Always consider items that can last a few days: mainly water, shelf-stable foods, and quick snacks. Even during a power outage, you can stay nourished to have energy for when it’s time to get out into the weather to assess a situation better, or for cooking or doing minor outdoor repairs. Many items are everyday basics. If you have a stove/oven in operation, you’ll be in much better shape than many people.

Basic non-perishable foods

Baby food, supplies & medications – for the little ones.
Baking mixes - foods like pancakes and biscuits can be great fillers and made easily with a hot plate (pancakes) or outdoor griddle, grill or campfire (biscuits).
Beverages – instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc.
Bread and Grains – oats, rice, and other types of grains are filling starches that are easy to make with water/milk. Also consider bagels, cereal, crackers, cookies, chips, toaster pastries and other similar snacks.
Canned foods/soups – canned fish/meats and fruits/vegetables are useful in a pinch as a substitute for fresh or frozen food. Canned beans, in particular, are versatile and excellent additions for soups and chilis. Be sure to have a manual can opener on hand.
Condiments & seasonings – a must for grilling out during power outages.
Granola or protein bars – easy on-the-go snacks that provide quick energy.
Jarred food – jellies, pickles, meats, etc.
Milk - shelf-stable or powdered. Buy practically any type of milk or alternative, just observe storage instructions on packaging.
MREs – “Meals Ready to Eat” are great to have on hand. Those who have served in the military will surely be familiar with these.
Pasta and jarred sauces – an instant meal of just two items. Pasta is easy to heat up and add anything for a more rounded nutritional meal.
Peanut butter and jelly – any nut butter can provide a great source of healthy fats and protein.
Pet food, supplies & medications – for outdoor animals in winter, consider safe heating sources, covered shelter, and bedding (straw or water-resistant fabric).
Snacks – packaged and pre-portioned, easy to grab - e.g. beef jerky, pudding cups, applesauce, etc.

Basic perishable foods

Fresh produce – milk and eggs are great to have for the first few days, but some can spoil quickly if in temps of 40 degrees F or higher for a couple of hours, so consume those first.
Fruits and veggies – much like the pantry staples, uncut fruits and some veggies can last for several days outside of refrigeration if the power goes out.
- Apples
- Avocados
- Bananas
- Carrots
- Citrus, such as oranges and grapefruits
- Pears
- Potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Dried fruits and nuts – make a trail mix or just enjoy as an instant snack.
- Packaged fruit cups or canned fruits and veggies
- etc.
Bottled water – for when power goes out, have some on hand for drinking, food prep, washing hands, brushing teeth, sink baths, flushing the toilet. Stock up for a 3-5 day supply - one (1) gallon per person per day (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests a gallon a day for each person in the household).
Disposable dishware – paper bowls/plates and plastic utensils, plus paper towels and toilet paper. Helpful when there is no water for dishwashing and no time for extra clean-up duties after power is restored.

HOME PROPERTY WRAP-UP (what to do after a storm)

Boats/marine vessels – check marine vessels and secure them fully.
Boat dock – check dock and dock cables/lines and fully secure or repair.
Contacts list – keep a list of emergency contacts (check our list) so that reaching out for help is quick and easy.
Debris – clean up debris and place neatly in a location designated for pick up, or find a company to relocate it to a proper dump site, or prepare to discard debris if no pick up is available in the area.
Drive carefully – realize that roads could be affected, there could be storm debris, and some roads may be closed/blocked. Remember there may be other anxious drivers out and about.
Help – consider lending a hand to assist others once personal property and belongings are secured.
Property inspection – check for downed lines, downed trees, busted plumbing, roof damage, etc.

VEHICLES

VEHICLE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Battery – test to be sure it is operable and replace if necessary.
Engine fluid levels – check oil (use synthetic oil in cool temps), washer fluid (use de-icing fluid in cold temps), coolant/anti-freeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc. It’s best to keep fluid levels optimal at all times, and keep good records on this type of maintenance.
Lighting – test headlights and taillights to be sure they are fully operable.
Tires – inspect tread, check for leaks, (winter weather: install snow tires if pertinent, or have tire chains on hand).

VEHICLE EMERGENCY KIT

Air Compressor (portable) – consider one that also offers charging ports for phones or other convenient features.
Blankets or sleeping bags – preferably water-resistant materials.
Clothing – preferably water-resistant materials. For winter: mittens/gloves, hats, boots, coats, and thinner warm layering pieces. For all weather events, it is handy to have an extra set of clothing and underwear to replace any that become wet/soiled/exposed to elements.
First Aid Kit – add one to the trunk and inspect it often, but definitely before any trip that might encounter adverse weather conditions.
Food – ready to eat is best, plus snacks and high-calorie non-perishable foods.
Gas – make sure all vehicles have a full tank.
Lighting – battery-operated, chargeable flashlights or camping lanterns.
Medication – extra prescription medicine should be something always available for trips and unexpected events.
Mobile phone and supplies – cell phone chargers, relevant cords, pre-charged mobile power banks.
Tires – spare tire(s) and basic operable jack.
Toilet – bucket to use as an emergency toilet, trash bags to line it and for sanitary disposal, plus tissues, toilet paper, wet wipes and paper towels.
Tools – flares, jumper/booster cables, knife, multipurpose tool, scissors, tire gauge, tow ropes/straps, plus a window breaker and seatbelt cutter, which should already be in the tool kit for other types of emergencies (winter pertinent: ice scraper with brush, snow shovel with brush).
Traction material – sand or cat litter for assisting a stuck vehicle in a muddy/icy/snowy area.
Travel – park vehicles away from large trees and loose limbs whenever possible. During severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings, stay put - it is not safe to drive during these conditions. Winter specific: make it a family plan to avoid driving once freezing rain begins and wait to get back on the road after weather reporters advise it is safe to do so. Remember that bridges, overpasses and shaded roads freeze first and longest. Assume that in any difficult weather conditions, flights and travel can be disrupted for days at a time.
Water – consider one (1) gallon per person per day.
Wipers – replace old wiper blades and top off washer fluid.

A favorite time of year for all those who LAKE is Boat Show Season - usually occurring at the beginning of every year, January - March. For us, it means SPRING is just around the corner. It seems the lake community revs up into high gear for a new boating season as soon as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve!

Many enjoy attending several boat shows each year. Favorite shows are within about a 3 hour driving range. Attending shows allows a great reason to get out and go visit another city, reconnect with other boating friends aka "your lake people," and getting excited for a new lake season by checking out the vendors - favorite boat brands, marinas, lake life brands and lake-oriented businesses.

1. Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up, and how did you first experience Smith Lake?

My family lived in the Crane Hill area and moved to the lake just after it was formed. My granddad lived near where the lake eventually came to be for many years. He was a land buyer for the Leigehber family in Cullman and actually purchased the land where the lake is now located on their behalf, long before the water ever filled in. Later, that land was sold to Shoreline Properties—Billy Williams and Allen Walker—making them the largest lake property owners.

My granddad kept about 100 acres for himself. I remember how hard it was for him to pay for that land as a farmer. When the lake first formed, he was selling lots for $500. Years later, his final lots sold for around $200,000.

So, we truly were some of the very first people on the lake. Nothing was cleared, and there were trees everywhere. A few families from Birmingham bought lake lots and brought in mobile homes—back then that was considered quite impressive. Boats were rare and you hardly saw anyone at all in those early years.

My granddad taught me to fish, and those are some of my favorite childhood memories. We swam, but to us it was just home—not a “vacation spot.” Our family spent a lot of time clearing land, working on our property, and creating what has now become priceless family history. Today, we graze registered Hereford cattle on that same land.

My other granddad actually operated the equipment that helped build the dam, so I truly have deep connections to Smith Lake in every sense.

2. In your opinion, what makes Smith Lake such a special place?

This really clicked for me once I began selling real estate. I realized I was living in one of the best places in the United States. We enjoy the peace and space of lake living, yet we’re only about an hour from excellent healthcare, shopping, and everything you’d ever want from a major city.

Crane Hill is one of the top destinations on Smith Lake, and the lake itself is known nationwide for its stunning water clarity and overall cleanliness. You might say we live in one of the best places there is!

But beyond the natural beauty, I love the “culture” of the lake. We have wonderful, down-to-earth locals, but also incredibly interesting people from all over the country (and the world) who have accomplished so much in their careers. Hearing their stories is one of my favorite parts of real estate.

To me, it’s the combination of amazing people and an outstanding natural environment that makes Smith Lake truly special.

3. How much time do you spend on the lake and what are your favorite lake activities?

When the weather is warm, I spend most of my time outside on the deck or at the dock watching the lake and all the activity—fishing, boating, wave runners, and kids having the time of their lives. My favorite sound in the world is kids laughing and squealing with joy on the water.

We enjoy cruising in our tritoon from one end of the lake to the other, especially in the spring when I love seeing the new homes that have gone up over the winter. I used to love skiing and wish I still could, but now I enjoy swimming, boating, and riding the WaveRunner whenever my family isn’t using it!

One of my favorite things to do is go to Trident Grille for dinner and concerts and, of course, to meet lake people. We are very fortunate to have such a great restaurant, music venue and fun place for fellowship in our rural lake area.

4. How has your personal experience translated to being a successful realtor?

Being here my entire life has given me an undeniable advantage. I know the history, the lake locations, the water levels, and the community in a way that simply can’t be learned overnight.

I can often tell you whether water is seasonal or year-round just by the address. I know the deep-water areas, where sandbars hide, what homes are located in the flood plain, and who to call for just about anything.

There’s simply no way most realtors could have this perspective. After all these years, I can finally say I’m truly an expert in something!

5. What are some interesting things about yourself?

Before real estate, I spent 29 years at Wallace State Community College, ultimately serving as Dean. That was my life’s work, and I’m extremely proud of it.

I spent the last 13 years caring for my parents as they aged. I sold real estate during those years but had very little time for anything outside of those responsibilities.

I initiated the “Best of Smith Lake Awards” events because I wanted to recognize and celebrate the businesses that serve lake residents so well.

My daughter and I started the Smith Lake Shirts business, which she continues today as The Lake Co—a brand you’ll now find in shops all around the lake.

And something many people don’t know—I’ve played piano all my life and served as pianist and organist at Bethany Baptist Church.

6. Tell us about Cooper!

My daughter originally picked out Cooper as a puppy. We surprised my husband, who really did not want a dog, by just bringing him home one day! When she left for college, Cooper and I became inseparable—so I got to keep him. He has been such a comfort to both me and my mother, especially through her stroke.

He’s a true lake dog and swims several times a day. I wait with a towel to dry him off, and he looks so peaceful wading through the water looking for fish. Many boaters know him by name—I hear people calling to him as they go by!

He barks at fishermen and boaters who get too close, and I can’t imagine ever living without a golden retriever. He has my heart.

7. Do you think the Smith Lake community will continue to grow and thrive?

The lake economy is massive now: builders, marinas, restaurants, dock companies, realtors, surveyors, landscapers, furniture, and more. I would love to see a true economic study because I think most surrounding communities have no idea how much revenue Smith Lake brings into the region.

Even during recession years, real estate continues to sell here because demand for lake living has never really slowed.

8. Any final notes as our very first Guest Editor?

My passions regarding the lake are safety and lake preservation and my love is meeting the people of Smith Lake. I look forward to highlighting more interesting lake residents in the future.

I’m honored to be the first Guest Editor. My hope is that through this role, we can continue celebrating the lake, supporting the businesses that make this community special, and reminding everyone just how fortunate we are to call Smith Lake home.

Things to Do at Smith Lake

Access: First of all you have to get here. Traveling to the lake is quick and easy:

Cullman County - access the Cullman County side of the lake "east side" primarily from I-65 from Exits 299 (to Hwy 69), 304 (to Hwy 437, Hwy 438 & Hwy 222) & 309 (to Hwy 278)
Walker County - enter the Walker side "southwest side" from I-22 into Jasper and through Curry AL
Winston County - the Winston side "west side" can be accessed through Cullman and Walker, both the Curry Highway (Hwy 41) and Helicon Road from Hwy 278 eventually intersect in Arley, AL (The Heart of Smith Lake), and Hwy 278 on the far northwest side accesses the furthest area from major interstates - the Double Springs, AL area.

For reference, distances are (from the popular 299 Exit from I65):
- about 40 minutes to Birmingham AL (40 miles)
- about 1 hour to Huntsville AL (60 miles)
- about 2 hours & 20 mins to Nashville, TN (150 miles)

Once you have an address of where you want to go, everything is accessible via GPS, but keep in mind that most of the lake is still very rural, so traveling around can be tricky. There are still some dirt/gravel roads in the area, as well as some hard pack roads. If you're veering off main highways and don't have a 4-wheel-drive, just be mindful of road conditions in inclement weather.

Activities: there are so many activities to enjoy on Smith Lake. We'll list a few of our favorites below.

Boating - all types of motor operated or man powered vehicles (i.e. cabin cruisers, wakeboard boats, wakesurf boats, pontoons, jet boats, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, jet-skis, even sailboats in designated areas, etc.).
- Check our list of boat ramps if you're not sure where to launch or recover your boat. The landings we highly recommend for newbies are located at Smith Lake Park, The Dam, Duskin Point Marina, and Duncan Bridge Marina.
- Looking for a marina to purchase a boat - try Duskin Point Marina, Rambo Marine, Poor House Branch Marina at Smith Lake, Russell Marine-Smith Lake and Skier's Marine at Trident Marina, they're happy to help you - see our list of marinas in the area. Watersports - enjoy anything you like such as wakeboarding, wakesurfing, wakeskating, waterskiing, slalom, kneeboarding, barefooting, hydrofoiling, wakefoiling, efoiling tubing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), etc. Shop local marina pro shops and stores like:
- Marinas - try all the local marinas, since most have nearly everything you need for lake life living: Duskin Point Marina, Rambo Marine, Poor House Branch Marina at Smith Lake, Russell Marine-Smith Lake and Skier's Marine at Trident Marina .

Fishing - enjoy angling on the reservoir or fly fishing below the reservoir on the peaceful waters of the Black Warrior River. You will find the lake area provides great fishing. Common catches are: Crappie, Bream, Striped Bass, Spotted Bass, White and Largemouth Bass; Channel & Flathead Catfish, and there are Rainbow Trout provided in the area below the dam for those who love fly-fishing - be sure to check out lessons at well-known Riverside Fly Shop.
- For fishing gear, we highly recommend Cullman's Mary Carter Store and Van's Sporting Goods - they offer equipment for all outdoor sports, including watersports but also fishing, camping, hiking, and hunting. You'll find everything you need.
Wildlife - there are abundant common wildlife in the area such as deer, fox, raccoons, groundhogs, chipmunks, wild turkey, etc. It has been reported there are small mountain lions, coyotes and small black bear in the area too, but those animals need a wide range and are seen more often in the northwest end of the lake into the Bankhead National Forest.
Birdwatching - gorgeous birds commonly found in the southeast are proliferate here as well as Eagles, Blue Herons, Mallard Ducks, Canadian Geese, Loons, Kingfishers, many songbirds, hummingbirds, etc.
There are so many more general lake activities - swimming, camping, hiking - the possibilities are simply endless. Be sure to check out our RV campsites in the area.
Visit Smith Lake Landmarks aka #spotsonsmith - find many of the favorite spots on Smith Lake through maps on our MAP page in the LOCAL INFO tab. We often cover these favorite spots in our magazine, and soon we'll have a page dedicated to these spots.
Adjoining the lake on the far northwest end is the celebrated William B. Bankhead National Forest and Sipsey Wilderness that are simply a MUST SEE. A heavenly gorge/cavern and mountain area full of creeks, streams, waterfalls, and riverbeds (such as Sipsey Fork River, Smith Lake's west side headwater, feeds the lake on the west side). Here you'll find an abundance of well-kept trails along natural rock bluff walls, hills and valleys with not only hiking trails, but biking, horseback and off-road riding trails as well. The area is massive, and best not to go off-trail unless you are a very experienced hiker or are hiking with a group that is. The area is absolutely STUNNING.
- There are facebook pages dedicated to traversing this treasured area from many different trailheads. Its nickname is "The Land of a Thousand Waterfalls" - just a quick Google search or search on social media will show you just why it has that name.
- Just "Google it," and be prepared to go down the proverbial "rabbit hole" of beautiful photography and scenery like nothing you've ever seen.
AND... that's just ON the lake - the three counties that surround the lake offer so much more to do outside the lake area year round:
- such as shopping Jasper Main Street in Jasper's historical downtown area, and the Cullman Warehouse District in the historical area of Cullman that lies near the old Train Depot, Depot Park where most of Cullman's annual magical events occur, and all are right beside Cullman's famous downtown railroad tracks.
- Within the 3 area counties are other exciting points of interest to visit such as natural and manmade parks, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, historical sites, and incredible landmarks - all very close to the area. A visit to the local Chamber of Commerces, as well as area museums, offer a wealth of information about the counties that surround the lake (see links below).

Safe Boating Practices - Observing National Safe Boating Week

About the National Safe Boating Council

"Established in 1958, the National Safe Boating Council is the foremost coalition for the

The important National Safe Boating Week happens annually the week prior to summer kick-off, which is before Memorial Day weekend. The reason?...because many more boaters are out on the water in late spring and all summer than any other time of the year. NSBC simply asks the public to celebrate the annual event by doing a few things to help raise awareness.

Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day - anytime is great, but their official day is Friday, May 17, 2024. Head over to the Safe Boating Campaign page for info and instructions about this special day.
Observe National Safe Boating Week in some way. This could be through posts on social media to more hands-on community activities - just check out the NSBC page for guidance on this.
NSBC encourages boating enthusiasts to share information with their local community about responsible boating via social media, launch point reminders, outreach events, vessel safety checks, and more. It's so easy, they supply you with everything you need on their website.

They offer a great toolkit that includes a selection of resources: talking points, daily social media posts, template press announcements, fact sheets, videos, images, and more! Just grab something and help spread the word.

Boating Safety Tips

Wear a life jacket - No matter what activity you have planned on the water, always remember to wear a life jacket every time you are on the water. Accidents on the water can happen much too fast to reach and put on a stowed life jacket. Make sure your life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for your water activity and fits properly. A life jacket that is too large or too small can cause different situational problems.
Know state boating laws - Rules and laws can differ from state to state and violations can result in ticketing, fines or jail time.
Take a boating safety course - Learn valuable tips that can help save your life in unexpected situations by taking a NASBLA (National Association of Boating Law Administrators) approved boating safety course. Many courses are online, and will save you money on your boat insurance.
Make sure your boat is prepared - There

are many items that need to be checked and rechecked on any boat. Schedule a Vessel Safety Check with your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons before you hit the water. Every Vessel Safety Check is conducted 100 percent free of charge. Be sure to know your boat’s capacity. If you have too much on your boat, the boat may become unstable and capsize.
Check the weather, including the water temperature - Know the latest marine weather forecast prior to going out, and keep a regular check for changing conditions.
Dress properly - Always dress for the weather, wearing layers if cooler weather, and bring an extra set of clothes in case you get wet.

Always file a float plan - File a float plan with someone you trust that includes details about the trip, boat, persons, towing or trailer vehicle, communication equipment, and emergency contacts.
Use an engine cut-off switch – it’s the law - An engine cut-off switch is a proven safety device to stop a powerboat engine should the operator unexpectedly fall overboard
Always follow navigation rules - Know the “Rules of the Road” such as operator’s responsibility, maintaining a proper lookout, safe speed, crossing, meeting head-on, and overtaking situations. Know what’s going on around you at all times, and always travel at safe speeds for the environment.
Don’t drink while you boat - Where the primary cause was known, alcohol was listed as a leading factor in boating-related deaths. Always designate a sober skipper.
Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning - Gasoline-powered engines on boats, including onboard generators, produce carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that can poison or kill someone who breathes too much of it. Be sure to install and maintain a working CO detector, never block exhaust outlets, and always dock, beach, or anchor at least 20 feet away from the nearest boat that is running a generator or engine.
Keep in touch - Communication devices can be the most important piece of emergency equipment on board a vessel, especially in case of emergency. Be sure to have at least two communication devices that work when wet, such as satellite phones, emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRB), VHF radios, and personal locator beacons (PLB). And, know how to use it.

Important Boating Stats

This info is directly from the Safe Boating Council website, based off *Statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2022 Recreational Boating Statistics) Keep these stats in mind to help motivate you and your crew to spread the word about boating safety!

Number of Registered Boats - The 11,770,383 recreational vessels registered by the states in 2022 represent a 1.6% increase from last year when 11,957,886 recreational vessels were registered.
Fatality Rate - was 5.4 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. This rate represents a 1.8% decrease from the 2021 fatality rate of 5.5 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels.
2022 total boating accidents - In 2022, the Coast Guard counted:
- 4,040 accidents that involved 658 deaths
- 2,222 injuries
- $63 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents
Victims not wearing a life jacket - According to recent U.S. Coast Guard statistics, where cause of death was known 85 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket in 2022.
Boating instruction - Where instruction was known, 74% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator did not receive boating safety instruction. Where instruction was known, only 14% of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had received nationally-approved boating safety instruction.
Boating and Drowning - Drowning is the reported cause of death in 75% of all boating fatalities. 3 out of every 4 boaters who drowned were using vessels less than 21 feet in length.
Top contributing factors in boating accidents - The top five primary contributing factors in accidents are operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure.
Boating under the influence - Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Where the primary cause was known, alcohol was listed as the leading factor in 16% of deaths.
Propeller Strikes - There were 173 accidents in which at least one person was struck by a propeller. Collectively, these accidents resulted in 41 deaths and 182 injuries.
Common vessels involved in boating accidents - Where data was known, the most common vessel types involved in reported accidents were open motorboats (47%), kayaks (14%), personal watercraft and pontoons (both 9%).

Crank 4 Bank: Innovative Fishing Event Makes Waves at Smith Lake

A whooping $1.6 million worth of prizes is up for grabs - so grab a pole and start fishing!

Anglers of all ages have been invited to participate this spring and summer in a unique fishing event being held for the first time at Smith Lake, lasting from April 1st until July 4th, 2024. The prizes will be awarded Sunday, July 14th, 2024. (Venue to be announced – all winners must be present to claim prizes.)

The event, Crank 4 Bank, hosted by OGS Tournaments, lets anglers register and purchase a $120 ticket to have a chance at catching tagged spotted and largemouth bass and crappie worth $1,500 dollars each, along with a chance at being drawn to win one of four $60,000 prizes: a Bass Cat from Russell Marine, a Nitro bass boat from Sylacauga Marine, a new pontoon boat from Trident Marina, and a new Chevrolet truck, from Alan Embry of Step One Chevrolet of Bessemer. Ticket holders are also eligible to win prizes through the first ever virtual fishing tournament on Smith Lake that runs concurrently with Crank 4 Bank.

“This is the first time we’re doing it on Smith Lake,” says Vivian Autry, who owns Crank 4 Bank and OGS Tournaments alongside her husband Mike Autry. “We call it a tagged fishing event and a virtual tournament. It’s two separate things for one entry fee, and $120 gets you both.”

Vivian says the idea behind the virtual tournament is that as you try to fish for tagged fish, you’re likely going to catch a lot of non-tagged fish. With the Fishing Chaos app that you need to download and use to register, you simply take pictures of the length of your fish on an approved bump board (no tape measures), upload it, and the system will automatically cull your top five fish. At any point in time, you can see who’s winning.

“We give out various weekly prizes for bass and bi-weekly prizes for the longest fish of the week, and the longest crappie of the week or every other week,” she says.

The tagged fish for the event include 75 crappie and 200 largemouth and spotted bass.

“They’re dispersed all over the lake, in Winston County, Walker County and Cullman County,” Vivian says. “It’s a lot to put them all out like that, but it’s the only way that it’s fair. If you dumped them all at Big Bridge or somewhere, that’s just not fair. You want to make it where they’re all over the entire lake. Although they swim, and you can’t say ‘fish stay’ by any means, you can still think and hope that they are staying within the vicinity of where we put them out.”

There will be a separate but identical Crank 4 Bank tournament held simultaneously on Lake Martin, where the event has been held for 4 years.

“Just for context, we had 16 winners on Lake Martin last year, and the same amount of fish were tagged as this year,” Vivian says. “We had 35 caught, but only 16 were registered. A couple of years ago, we had somebody win one of the bass boats. It’s 100 percent doable, it’s just a matter of getting out there and getting registered.”

Luckily for anglers with a busier schedule or from out of town, a registration deadline is not an issue for those who wish to participate.

“I think the biggest thing we need to tell people is that they can register all the way up to July 3, 2024 if they want to, because the whole idea is that some people - especially at Smith Lake because you have lots of rentals (Vrbos and Airbnbs) - will come in just for a weekend with their family,” Vivian says. “If they’re fishing off the dock or somewhere else, and they register and catch one, they may not come but one time, so we just want people to know.”

At the end of the Crank 4 Bank and the virtual tournament, prizes for first place, second place, and overall big fish for both crappie and bass will be awarded on July 14th. All tagged fish winners and virtual tournament winners will be subjected to a lie detector test with questions to validate the legitimacy of the catches. At the time of this article’s publication, the weigh-in location is still to be announced, but a spacious venue is currently being secured.

“One of the things that’s cool to mention is that it’s outdoor friendly, something to get you outside and fishing on your beautiful lake, and that it’s something fun you can do as a family together, no matter the age” Vivian adds. “You don’t have to have a boat, either. You could fish off your dock or off the shore, and you can use live bait.”

As for the rules, participants will need a valid Alabama freshwater fishing license, fish must be caught using a traditional rod and reel (no trotlines, snagging, hoop nets, shocking, etc.). Only the angler who first hooks and lands the prize-winning fish will be eligible to submit the fish. No transfer of the rod during or after the landing of the fish from a non-registered angler will be allowed, and anglers must be registered on the Fishing Chaos app and entry fees must be paid for two full hours prior to landing a prize-winning fish to be eligible to submit a catch.

Boat Equipment Check List

Make sure you and your boat are safe and legitimate for boating season. This is an imperative component in your boating safety plan.

We recommend you do this well before spring and summer are underway. Each year as the official summer kick-off date - Memorial Day holiday weekend - gets underway, you will notice even more Alabama Marine Patrol presence to balance the large influx of additional boaters on Alabama waterways, important when considering that over a million registered boaters enjoy waterways throughout Alabama yearly. Here on Lewis Smith Lake, we have marine patrol presence year round, but the fleet’s efforts towards routine patrol grow understandably during the peak boating season of summer months. We are more than happy to see them here, and admire and respect all they do to help our community.

#1 - FIRST AND FOREMOST - We believe it is always best to get information direct from the proper legal source about how to prepare yourself and your boat for a busy lake season. Therefore, FIRST thing we recommend is that you please visit the website for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency "ALEA" – "Alabama Marine Patrol Division" (also listed in our quick links on our website’s home page). You will find a wealth of vital information on the site to help you and your boat operate safely and securely every boating season.
Know the checklist for your state - Alabama. Below we offer some basic boating equipment preparation advice, along with the recommended boating equipment items you should check annually as outlined in the ALEA checklist – but again, first, please check their official “Boat Equipment Checklist for Alabama” (also listed in our quick links on our website’s home page) as they need to be your prime source of such information.

This service has been invaluable to us in the past, and you will find that it will give you secure peace of mind throughout the year.

Operator License - Make sure everyone who might possibly captain the boat has proper boater education, experience and a legal Alabama boat operator license onboard at all times. We also keep our registration documents and manufacturer booklets in a waterproof sealed bag stored in the boat.

Driver instruction - Just as important, and really it goes without saying, make sure that any new drivers in your crew have proper instruction driving on the lake with an experienced captain offering full assistance and a constant watchful eye. Obviously, this is best done at a time when boat traffic is low, like on a weekday in a remote area of the lake. Plan to work with your crew explaining everything about the boat, allow them adequate turns driving the boat and learning every scenario - experience is a must. Slow and steady wins the race here - don't be too quick to throw a new driver into the seat during the busy summer weekends, that is NOT the time to learn. Proper learning takes time and patience.
Registration - The boat’s certificate of number must be easily accessible on board.

Boat Decal - Validation decals must be properly displayed, highly visible, and easily identifiable from both sides of the boat for marine patrol. If you are not sure where or how to apply these, contact ALEA prior to launching your boat to be sure you have mounted these properly (see diagram).
Trailer - Check out your boat trailer carefully. If you will be hauling your boat to several locations/launches, you need to check tires, spare tires, electrical connections, lighting, winches, jacks, trailer guides, carpeting and anything else on your trailer that assists in creating carefree safe travel and launching.
Pulling and launching a boat - If there are new drivers in your crew, take them out during the week to teach them how to drive with a trailer in tow, and how to back in and pull out a trailer. Teach launching at a time (like during the week or early morning hours) and at a place where there is low traffic for the safety and comfort of everyone. Move or end your training session if you begin to see traffic around you back up. Learning to back in a boat trailer quickly and safely is vital to being a good boat owner because nothing is worse on a busy summer holiday weekend than a traffic jam at a boat launch. You are expected to know the rhythm and get out of the way if you are hindering it.

Detail your vessel and organize it - Clean, detail, and organize your boat. This is imperative, because in case of emergency, you do not want to be scrambling for safety equipment or tripping over items that are not in their proper place. This also allows you to see if there are issues developing on the boat (i.e. cracked interior upholstery, damaged trim on the boat exterior or interior entry areas, gelcoat fractures around towers or other mounts that could cause weaknesses, leaks or hazards, frayed or damaged wiring, etc.) We highly recommend Bama Detailing - Winner of the BEST OF SMITH LAKE 2022 contest. After detailing has been done and inspected, put everything in its proper place carefully and take some time to educate your passengers where all safety equipment is located on the boat so anyone can help quickly in an emergency. Make sure safety items are VERY EASY to find, grab and use.

Boat and Tower Accessories – (i.e. audio equipment, LED lighting, boat racks, light bars, upgraded marine flooring, etc.) Make sure these are proper for your boat, using manufacturer approved products and hardware, and make sure that all accessories are securely attached and operating correctly. Realize that some audio and other digital equipment when used or installed incorrectly can cause very serious electrical and computer issues on new boat digital and electrical systems, so using a local professional is vital - you need someone to call if something needs adjusting. Aim for a company who is also mobile and can come to your dock if needed, and available for phone assistance 24/7 – Need recommendations - call/text 256-708-7679.

PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) – There must be a proper U.S. Coast Guard/Coast Guard Approved "USCG/CGA" device for every rider in the boat, and children under 8 MUST wear their device at all times - while the boat is underway, floating, or anchored. There must also be at least one Type IV throwable device on board as well - commonly referred to as "seat cushions," throwable floating cushions and sometimes approved flat floating rings. Check to be sure the items indicate "Type IV" prior to purchase. Make sure all your PFDs are in good useable condition (i.e. not damaged, torn, dry-rotted, missing latches, bad zippers, etc.). Buy your life vests locally - shop local, support local - try Lakeside Gear in Cullman, AL for all your watersports gear - call 256-708-7679. This Alabama-based online company can order most anything you need for boating and watersports delivered right to your doorstep. Also visit other local sporting goods shops like Mary Carter Store, Pine Valley Outdoor Living, Rambo Marine, Russell Marine-Smith Lake, Smith Lake Gifts and Outdoors, Skier's Marine at Trident Marina, and Van's Sporting Goods.
Ropes - Make sure you have mooring and towing ropes in excellent condition and that you’ve learned, along with your crew, the best types of ties and knots to safely dock a boat in quick situations and for longer term parking or storage applications.
Lights – make sure your navigation lights are in excellent working condition because they MUST be used properly according to requirements from “sunset to sunrise” as defined by ALEA while the boat is underway, floating or anchored.

Engine check – make sure your engine has been maintained properly prior to launching and is in perfect operational condition. This means checking all connections to be sure there are no leaks of any kind that could cause hazard. This is a great time to check hoses, belts, impellars, etc. Also check the condition of your batteries, connections, and electrical system throughout the boat. Hopefully you have had professional maintenance or you are in close contact with your boat manufacturer and local dealer for any questions well ahead of the season.
Ventilation System/Blowers – These functions need to be in ideal working order at all times.
Muffler – This is self-explanatory and should be basic operating equipment for all newer boats. This helps keep the vessel engine noise at bay and keeps toxic fumes from being a hazard to those near the rear of the boat. If you have questions, please discuss this with your boat manufacturer immediately.

Fire Extinguishers – these must be appropriate for your size vessel, in perfect operating condition and not past their expiration date. See the ALEA link above for more detailed information.
Backfire Trap - USCG approved flame arrestor (aka backfire trap). ALEA explains this in their link, but if you are unsure about your vessel’s compliance, please contact your local dealer or the manufacturer so you can check that this is satisfactory and standard equipment on your boat, and how to handle the issue if needed.

Emergency shut-off switch - This is standard equipment on most vessels that operate on Smith Lake and often is a bright red or orange switch with a lanyard-type extension that connects from the boat switch point to the driver while a vessel is under operation. How does it work? If the "key" in the switch pulls out (in the case of a driver being thrown or ejected from the cockpit area in a crash type situation), the elimination of the key from the switch causes all power to the boat to be shut off immediately. This is an important safety feature. This device should be checked yearly to be sure there are no cracks or disconnections in the switch, weaknesses or breaks in the lanyard device or connection clip. The connection must be engaged and operational at all times while underway or while the boat is on. (see illustration)
Sound Device – this is described as a horn, whistle or bell type sound making device. Boaters should know that visibility can be affected greatly at night, or in inclement weather, fog, etc. Therefore, you must keep a sound device on board. We keep both a whistle and an air horn in a waterproof packet in our glove box at all times. Check each season to make sure they are in perfect working order.

Visual Distress Signals (VDSs). Please refer to the ALEA link above on this for particulars. This is required only on federally controlled waters, but as sailors in the Gulf, having them for us is a precaution that was always a part of our prep package for sailing and we've carried it over to our lake boating as an additional safety precaution - it's a personal thing. So, personally, we carry non-pyrotechnic devices: usually orange smoke signals for day use (3 are recommended) and a highly visible electric light for signaling at night (1 recommended), and we additionally carry a very bright flashlight and a white flag – all are for signaling distress at different times of the day. We feel most recreational boats that operate on very large inland lakes should have VDSs for peace of mind, and non-pyrotechnic is our favorite. If it is something you want to have, consider investing in a) 3 hand-held red flares (day & night), or b) 3 orange smoke signals (day) and 1 electric light (night).

Never leave a boater stranded - Last but not least, always safely stop to assist a boater in distress. Even if you do not have the equipment or experience to help, you may be able to assist them by getting them off an unsafe vessel, or simply helping to make a phone call if their cell phone is dead. This is kind of a known “rule of the water.” There is a saying we like as members of an ocean sailing family – “A sailor in need requires a good deed, so throw a rope and give him some hope." If you need to tow a boat, make sure your rope is proper for towing the weight of the other boat. On Smith Lake, we all consider it an honor to help a fellow boater any way we can safely. Folks around here more often don't ask for anything in return except that you “pay it forward.” It’s always nice to offer a few dollars for gas after a really long haul, or grab your helper a meal if the marina is open, but most boaters will require nothing more than a sincere and thoughtful “Thank you” and a promise to "Pay it Forward." Boating ettiquete at its best.

Safety Course and Boat Inspection - Did you know that …”the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will perform a Courtesy Marine Examination (CME) of your boat and equipment free of charge. This inspection covers federal and state requirements. If your boat meets all CME requirements, you will receive a CME decal. If your boat fails to meet all requirements, no report is made to any law enforcement agency.” - ALEA. It’s worth a call to ALEA to see if an inspection can be done in your area. TIP from local Capt. Chris Jackson-Professional Angler, "In fact, many USCG Auxiliary units (there is one on most lakes in Alabama) do a full boater safety course as well as free boat inspections yearly. I have attended several courses over the years along with getting my actual Captains License prior to becoming a guide and charter Capt.. it’s a great course. The inspection is great for anyone with a boat. They will go through the entire boat and list anything you need to get as well as give you a decal that your vessel was inspected that year. This is not required at all but great to have."

A little work on the front end of the season saves endless needless headaches, stress or worst yet, unnecessary and unwanted citations.
